What it contains
How to use it
Try the free gov.uk online application first
Search 'Marriage Allowance' on gov.uk. Takes 5 minutes. The transferor (lower earner) makes the application. This letter is only for cases needing written submission or where the online path has failed.
Confirm eligibility for every year you claim
For every year claimed: transferor's total income must have been below the Personal Allowance (GBP 12,570 for 2025/26, earlier figures for earlier years); transferee must have paid basic-rate Income Tax (not higher / additional). You must still be married or in civil partnership.
Tick every backdated year you qualify for
Backdating runs 4 years from the end of the relevant tax year. In 2025/26 the earliest eligible year is 2021/22. Each year claimed is worth approximately GBP 252 (figures vary by year).
Avoid contingent-fee reclaim firms
Cold-pitch 'marriage allowance reclaim' companies routinely take 30 to 40 percent contingent fees on work HMRC provides free. This template + the gov.uk online tool are the legitimate routes.
